Comdiflex

Creative Pills IrunLab Industria 2015

ORGANISATION

Comdiflex was founded in the 1960s and manufactures special sealing joints.

CHALLENGE
To identify new business areas based on the company’s present technologies and know-how. Ehcofab is involved in manufacturing processes by using the creative world as its starting point. It will make use of these two aspects to suggest several strategies to Comdiflex, from optimizing the use of CNC technology to identifying new activity areas.

IMPROBABLE COLLABORATOR

Ehcofab (Sevilla) is a place from which to explore, develop and produce with new digital production methods, responding to both individual and collective concerns.

PRESENTED PROJECT
Project developed: Long live Comdiflex
The challenge was to find an alternative line of business in Comdiflex by taking advantage of the technological and human qualities it has developed over its 50-year history in order to address an expected loss of Western European power in the field of oil.

The first session defined the framework of the company’s own possibilities and limitations. The aim of the What? Pill moved towards the How? to create a suitable environment so that the company could seek a new line of business on its own. Given that it is a small company (fewer than 25 workers), its internal organisation was analysed in order to seek the activation of other people who had hitherto remained “lethargic” to a certain degree in this creative phase.

The second and third sessions sought the complicity and interest of these other actors beyond that of the group associated with the project (which comprised 5 people). The need for improved communication and the integration of the functions of departments with little contact between them was identified. In the meantime, a technology – a water jet cutter – emerged as the experimental object that would help to create journeys of progress and return as to how to work together.

RESULT

In the last session, alongside other issues that were being simultaneously developed, a series of devices were defined that would mediate at those interstices between the company’s departments in order to serve the water jet cutter as an autonomous service and the deployment of Comdiflex in a local or nearby environment that was quite abandoned. Based on the lives of its workers and the various local circles formed by them, a draft of a new line is being drawn up together with the cutter’s specialised, professional service, allowing them to develop other areas (working with different quality textiles seems quite promising, but also a possible association with Alcad) in a less hurried period of time.
